Evidence From the Nile |
|
Modern scientists use ancient Egyptian records to trace El Niño's history. Along the river Nile, the Egyptians built river gauges, or Nilometers. On the Island of Rhoda, for example, river water flowed into an underground room where men measured the water level against a marked column. Exceptionally low river levels indicated droughts, which today often result from El Niños. |
