Official State Soil: Houston Black
November 24th

This is a photo of the layers that make up a Houston Black soil profile. Houston Black: Shrinking and Swelling Soils. Layer 1: Deep soil surface rich in decaying plant matter. Layer 2: Cracks are caused by clays that shrink when dry and swell when wet. Layer 3: The roots of the native prairie grasses that built this soil were this deep — and deeper! Layer 4: Lime in this layer makes the soil fizz when you add a little acid.
