Official State Soil: Cecil March 26th This is a photo of the layers that make up a Cecil soil profile. Cecil: Old, Red, Forest Soils. Layer 1: Plowing mixes surface organic matter into the top eight inches. Layer 2: Iron and clay minerals have weathered to form a blood-red mineral called hematite. Layer 3: Lower layers are "rotten rock," which has weathered from the "parent" rock below.
