Official State Soil: Chesuncook
June 15th

This is a photo of the layers that make up a Chesuncook soil profile. Chesuncook: Colorful, Forest Soils. Layer 1: A surface layer composed of partly decayed leaves and stems. Layer 2: Seeping rainwater washes the reddish iron and clay out of this layer, leaving it white. Layer 3: Layer is rich in iron and tea-like organic compounds washed down from above. Layer 4: Freezing and thawing slowly forces deep stones up to the soil surface.
