Official State Soil: Tanana July 10th This is a photo of the layers that make up a Tanana soil profile. Tanana: Cold, Frozen, and Wet Soils. Layer 1: Cold weather and waterlogging slow microbial decay, creating a thick soil layer of decaying plant matter. Layer 2: Freezing and thawing cause mixing with layers above and below. Layer 3: Lower layers are permanently frozen.
