September 15th

This is a photo of the layers that make up a Dickson soil profile. Dickson: Old, Forest Soils. Layer 1: Plowing mixes surface organic matter into the top eight inches. Layer 2: Clay minerals are starting to form in this layer. Layer 3: Layer is so hard and brittle that water and roots do not penetrate easily. Layer 4: Lower layers are rich in iron and clays, which formed from the original limestone rock.
