This is a photo of the layers that make up a Lynchburg soil profile. Lynchburg: Old, Wet, Forest Soils. Layer 1: Plowing mixes surface organic matter into the top eight inches. Layer 2: Seeping rain washes the reddish-yellow iron and clay out of this layer, leaving it pale. Layer 3: Layer is rich in iron and clay minerals. Some formed in place and others were washed down from above.
