Official State Soil: Natchez June 19th This is a photo of the layers that make up a Natchez soil profile. Natchez: Clay-Rich, Forest Soils. Layer 1: The soil surface is rich in decaying plant matter. Layer 2: Clay minerals are starting to form and accumulate in this layer. Layer 3: Lower layers are "parent" soil. They look similar to the whole soil profile when it first began to form.
