Cross section of soil

The Dig It! exhibit did not happen overnight. It has evolved and continues to evolve from multiple science and design concepts through the hard work and contributions of many scientists, designers, multimedia experts, animation artists, architects, CAD drawing experts, and many other content experts.

Artist and sculptor Matt McMullen is one of the people helping us to bring soils to life in the Dig It! exhibition. Using his talents and expertise in art, sculpture, and design, Matt has been inspired by soil to create new art. His work will include a dynamic sculptural piece, a kid-friendly, four-sided painted puzzle, and comical illustrations. We invite you to take a look at some of Matt's early sketches and hope they will make you even more excited to visit the Dig It! exhibition in July 2008.

sketch of a fantasty desert landscape

Where in the world can you find a jack-a-lope? In the Dig It! exhibition. In a fun and whimsical turn, Matt is creating a series of fun illustrations for our Mud Pie component.

Soil supports agricultural production of food around the world.

In this sketch, you can see the emerging shape of the Ins and Outs sculpture. The large painted geometric and curved structures depict soils at the heart of our planet. The towers and ropes represent the water and air constantly in motion in, around and through soils.

sketches of four very unique soils

These sketches depict four very different soil landscapes. The final paintings will become part of our Hidden Horizons Puzzle. Visitors will be invited to spin the puzzle blocks and try to create these four unique soils.
